River

River

Time was a river flowing steadily

Carrying us through days and weeks

But these are strange times

Time has become strange

Chronos has stepped aside

Allowing Kairos to determine the flow

Now the river of time is full of currents

Eddies hold us in the moment

For days at a time

Then catapults us into rapids

Where weeks pass in the blink of an eye

The usual landmarks of our passage through time

Are missing

Instead we have strange new rituals

Daily checks with thermometer and oximeter

There is a new found safety in numbers

But only the digital kind

Peace and fear are an alternating current

What we face now

What we will face in the future

Is so huge, so insurmountable

That we can’t even see it

It overwhelms our capacity for vision

So we cling to the mundane

Continue to consume plastic wrapped luxury

Continue to turn away from the decimation

Of all that could save us

Continue on our path to destruction
