Wild Twin

Wild twin

When she clawed at

The freshly painted

White walls

Trying to escape

I bound her tightly

In chains

When she howled

In anger

And in grief

At her incarceration

I silenced her

With rags

When she thrashed

And kicked

In an effort

To free herself

I suppressed her

With my body

In the darkness

She stayed

Cast out

Confined

Just waiting to be

Invited home

And when I crumbled

Under the weight

Of expectations

Of polite society

Who did I call for?

Her

She who could claw

And howl

And thrash

And kick

And save me

From my rubble

She with stained lips

From hedgerow berries

Plucked

And eaten

Without a care

For maggots

She with grazed knees

And grass stains

From tumbling

Out of trees

Without a care

For broken bones

She with dusty feet

From running

Just for the joy of feeling

Wind on a still day

Without a care

For breathlessness

She who dances

By firelight

To the beat of

Her own drum

Without a care

Who sees

She who knows

Where the sun rises

And sets

And the length of the night

Without a care

For the darkness

My wild twin

The beautiful one

Who I banished

All those years ago

Back when I was

A fool
