We

We

We made tools

Spears, bows and arrows

To kill animals to consume

Knives to skin and portion

We made fire

To cook what we killed

To warm us and light up the dark

To chase away our fears

We made ladders

To climb high to take

Honey from bees

So that life could be sweeter

We made spades and hoes

To dig the earth

To control where things grow

So we could stay still

We made wheels

Barrows and carts

To drag minerals from the earth

To burn, forge, reshape

And these things were precious

We hoarded them

We made walls

To show what was ours

To keep others out

To keep us safe

We made weapons to protect

Accumulated Earth riches

Grain, metal, wood, water

That belonged to Us

We made Them

The Others who would take from us

And sowed seeds of fear

Deep in the ground of our minds

We made weapons

To kill more efficiently

Those who would take

All we had accumulated

Our land

Our food

Our riches

Our gods

Protect protect protect

We made boats

To carry us to new places

Where treasure awaited

Land, gold, wine, spices, slaves

To be taken from Them

The Others who would take from us

We put them in their place

In wars paid for

With the blood of Our poor

We made wars

Where the only winners

Were the wealthy

Take take take

Take the moral high ground

They have the wrong gods

They are savages

They have the wrong rights

They have the wrong politics

They have what we want

And when there is nothing left to take

Will the hunger be satisfied?

Will the thirst be quenched?

Will the air be cleared?

Will Us and Them become We?

Will We see how wrong we were?
