Dawn

Dawn

My armour was strong

Black plates like serpent scales

Covered my heart

Each forged in the red hot heat of past hurts

Safety is too heavy a burden to carry forever

Especially if you’re meant to fly

So I let his words slice through them

As if they were no more substantial than smoke

Allowing myself to love lightly

Like a butterfly love a flower

Protection cleaved from me

I stood naked before him

Basking in the light of this new dawn

Terrified and brave
